Armstrong Whitworth Whitley

If the old axiom "If it looks right, it will fly right" is anything to go by, the angularly ugly Whitley should have been a nonstarter but the aircraft was one of the RAF's three mainstay bombers at the beginning of the war. Designed for night operation, the Whitley dropped the first bombs of the war on Germany. By mid 1942, it had been wthdrawn from front line service. It total, about 1800 were built, none survive.
