The prototype Short Stirling (L7600, above) had its maiden flight in May of 1939 and was written off upon landing when a binding brake caused the unusually long undercarriage to collapse. The mechanism was extensively redesigned in the second prototype. This was more successful and more than 2300 units were eventually built.
