Mustangs of the 23rd Fighting Group, China

Roger A Freeman; Mustang at War, Doubleday 1974

As a kid growing up in the sixties, the exploits of the General Claire Chenault, the Flying Tigers and their P40s in China at the beginning of WW2 was a favorite story, the group was disbanded in July 1942 and reformed as the 23rd Fighting Group of the USAAF. In November of 1943 the obsolete P40s began to be replaced with Mustangs, continuing the familiar shark face paint scheme. Here the new Mustangs pose in 1944.
